Malnutrition means poor nutrition, or under nutrition. It is when a person’s diet does not provide enough calories or the body lacks sufficient vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to stay healthy. It can be caused by a variety of factors including loss of appetite, lack of ability to chew and swallow, and increased use of prescription medications. Other risk factors include depression, dementia, chronic diseases, and lack of access to nutritious food.
Malnutrition in older adults is a serious health problem which can affect activities of daily living and quality of life. Older adults are hospitalized more frequently and are more likely to be in long-term care facilities, putting them at increased risk for malnutrition. The World Health Organization (WHO) aims for a world free of all forms of malnutrition, where all people achieve health and wellbeing.
