Obesity is a complex chronic disease that is characterized by too much body fat. It affects your metabolism and raises the risk of serious health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver disease, sleep apnea and certain cancers. It can affect your self-esteem and mental health. Causes of obesity may include consuming more calories than burned, genetics, hormonal imbalances, certain medications, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy food choices. To diagnose obesity, your health care professional may perform a physical exam and recommend some tests, including taking your health history, calculating your BMI, measuring your waist size and checking for other health problems.
